Just off the shore from the buzzing French Riviera town of Cannes sits a small and stunning archipelago known as the Lérins Islands. These islands consist of four exquisite small isles, of which Île Sainte-Marguerite and Île Saint-Honorat are the largest. Each island has a unique and fascinating history that makes them uniquely memorable.

Our recent blog explored the naming of the Lérins penthouse, inspired by the magnificent views seen from its rooftop. So, here we dive a little deeper into discovering how the unique identity of Île Sainte-Marguerite is reflected in our duplex penthouse at Parc du Cap, Marguerite.

An island with two façades

Île Sainte-Marguerite is a gem of an island, a little paradise as well as a destination of historical importance.

The island is a wonderful spot to immerse yourself in nature and is perfect for lovers of the outdoors. There are many species of birds and other wildlife residing in the island’s 152 acres of forest. In addition, eucalyptus and pine are present everywhere, enveloping a long network of well-signposted paths, creating a canopy of shade and glorious scent. In fact, there is a route called the Allée des Eucalyptus, which winds its way across the island to picturesque beaches. This route also takes visitors to the fort where the ‘Man in the Iron Mask’ was incarcerated.

The Iron Mask and its mystique

To clarify, Île Sainte-Marguerite is famous for being home to the mysterious ‘Man in the Iron Mask’. Also known as the Prisoner of France, he was held in the island’s magnificent mediaeval fort by orders of King Louis XIV in the late 17th century. During this time, great measures were taken to ensure no one ever saw the prisoner’s face or knew his identity. Therefore, sadly for him, he did not have the pleasure of seeing much of this special island! Today, his cell and the fort are open to visitors, and also well worth a visit within the fort is the Museum of the Sea.

How to get there

Although this island paradise feels a million miles away from Cannes’ bustling beach clubs and the Promenade de la Croisette, it is only a short 20-minute ferry ride away. The Lérins Islands Ferry leaves regularly from Port de Cannes on the west side of the harbour.

If you fancy making more of an adventurous day out of visiting the island, you could rent a kayak or charter a private boat. This will provide an opportunity to explore the Riviera’s impressive coastline, studded with remote coves and beaches.

Our recommendations:

Where to eat: La Guérite – if you like a restaurant with great ambience and excellent food, La Guérite is a must whilst visiting the island. This exclusive and elegant beach club restaurant has an elite clientele who come to enjoy the glorious setting and buzzing atmosphere. There’s live music and plenty of champagne!

What to do: Whilst you are at Île Sainte-Marguerite, why not pay a visit to the neighbouring island of Île Saint-Honorat. Here there is a mediaeval monastery, Abbaye de Lérins, producing some fabulous wines.

Views that wow!

From the rooftop of the Marguerite penthouse, you will feel enlivened by the remarkable 360-degree views of the Côte d’Azur. Looking out towards the bay of Cannes, the Lérins Islands and especially Île Sainte-Marguerite can be spotted, glistening in the Mediterranean. The rooftop is the pinnacle of this stunning residence. You can lap up the Riviera vistas with a glass of chilled rosé in hand and relax by your private infinity pool.

New heights of luxury living

Relaxing vibes continue within the exquisitely designed duplex penthouse. The generously proportioned 160sqm of internal living space is perfectly equipped for hosting family and friends. Moreover, the open plan living and dining area includes a stylish, fully fitted Italian designer kitchen with integrated appliances. And to ensure further comfort and privacy, each of the four luxurious bedroom suites comes with its own private outdoor terrace. So, after a busy day visiting Île Sainte-Marguerite, you will be welcomed back to a calm and tranquil environment. Or it offers a great space to continue the La Guérite party!

Riviera life in true comfort

The development offers private underground parking and amenities including a luxury spa and gym, landscaped gardens, and tennis courts. The building has 24-hour security and concierge services. So, if you need help planning your visit to Île Sainte-Marguerite, a reservation at La Guérite, or with chartering a private yacht, the concierge team will be delighted to help.
