The Côte d’Azur’s rolling landscape offers the finest of playgrounds for an assortment of outdoor activities. And, right on the doorstep of Parc du Cap is the magnificent Massif de l’Estérel. This impressive sprawling mountain range has the capacity to draw out the adventurous and creative side in us all. In fact, the scenic Estérel landscape inspired the identity of Parc du Cap’s beautiful lateral penthouse, Estérel.

In this blog, we look further into what the impressive Massif de l’Estérel region has to offer. In addition, we explore the luxurious Estérel penthouse and what can be expected here after a day out in the Massif.

An enchanting mountain scape

It is not every day that one can say they have ventured within the 32,000 hectares of a volcanic mountain range. This mountain range is located within the departments of Var and Alpes-Maritimes on the French Riviera. The rugged topography of Estérel tells an extraordinary story: 250 million years ago, the west of Corsica and the Estérel Massif formed a single unit. Now, the rocky terrain, steep, hidden coves that plunge into the Mediterranean are home to glorious flora and fauna and landscapes of red-ochre rock. In fact, nearly half of Estérel is classified as ‘Natura 2000’ – a nature protection area. A visit to this area is highly recommended.

Exploring the massif

The Massif extends over the picturesque communes of Saint-Raphaël, Fréjus, Bagnols-en-Forêt and Les Adrets de l’Estérel. Across this area, there are plenty of activities for all ages and abilities to participate. And each allows visitors to experience the stunning scenery, various villages and areas of interest. For example:

  • Get up and close

The Massif de l’Estérel has many well sign-posted walking trails leading through wonderfully scented and colourful vegetation. Two of the most popular walks are the Pic de l’Ours (1h30 circular walk) and the Pic du Cap Roux (2h walk). A perfect outing pre or post a delicious local lunch.

  • Go for a spin

Estérel is also a dream spot for cycling enthusiasts with many fabulous routes through the winding hills. One particular road cycle that captures attention is from Mandelieu-la-Napoule – a loop heading inland to Fréjus and back to Mandelieu. Along the way, capture the many breath-taking Provençal scenes.

  • Take it off piste

The Massif also has hundreds of kilometres of mountain bike trails to explore. One of the most popular is a ride through the hills behind Théoule-sur-Mer. Once you reach the peak, relax and enjoy the spectacular views.

Where to eat:  La Maréa, Théoule-sur-Mer – a member of Les Collectionneurs Michelin Guide, La Maréa is a seafood restaurant serving fresh and local Mediterranean cuisine.

What to do: Discover the rocky cliffs, inlets and coves of Estérel – by land or sea. For instance, visit the Calanque de Saint-Barthélémy. Here, the coastline is notably characterised by the contrast between the red of the granite rock and sparkling blue Mediterranean. An ideal spot for snorkelling, exploring the sea life and shipwrecks in the shallow waters.

Riviera relaxation at its best

After an adventurous day out in the mountains, the sublime comfort and elegant design of Estérel lateral penthouse at Parc du Cap is a welcome sight. Within the generously proportioned living areas, there is plenty of space to relax and unwind – including four luxurious ensuite bedrooms.
